East Harlem, also known as El Barrio, is a lively area on the east side of Manhattan with strong ties to Puerto Rican culture. With your admission to the museum, you'll learn all about the richness of artistic expression and cultural history of the Caribbean and Latin America.
The permanent collection of El Museo del Barrio offers a profound art historical perspective on Latino culture in the Americas through different thematic areas. In Urban Experiences, you can see the photographs by the En Foco collective, which has been documenting Latino life in New York since the 1970s. There is also a section dedicated to illustrations, linocuts, serigraphs, posters and other conceptual works spanning from the 16th century through modern times.
Another main section of the exhibition is dedicated to the African and Indigenous Taíno heritages that form an essential part of the Puerto Rican identity. Here you can see artifacts from the Taíno culture and the works of outstanding artists like Evelyn López de Guzmán, David Antonio Cruz and Yvette Mayorga.
