Located on Fifth Avenue, next to Central Park, is an elegant Neo-Georgian style building built in the 1930s. The red brick mansion is home to the fascinating Museum of the City of New York.

The museum's permanent exhibition showcases the past, present and future of New York across a collection of more than 700,000 objects in different thematic areas. And you can travel back in time with the New York at Its Core exhibition: three galleries which explores New York though objects, images and contemporary videos, as well as digital interactive expereinces. And don't miss the Activist New York exhibition which tells the sotory of activism in the city's five boroughs.

The Museum of the City of New York's collections also include historic maps, manuscripts and other documents providing fascinating insight into the incredible history of Manhattan and the other boroughs on the banks of the East and Hudson Rivers.

The museum's audiovisual exhibitions are also well worth a visit: an award-winning 30 minute documentary, Timescapes, details 400 years of New York's history from humble beginnings as a small settlement to the cosmopolitan metropolis we know and love today.

To complete the experience, the museum's cafeteria, Amy's Bread, awaits you with typical New York sweet treats, breakfasts and lunches. There's also an excellent musuem shop for souvenirs!

Opening times

The museum is open from Friday to Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm. The only days it is closed are Thanksgiving, 25th December and 1st January.
