Museum of the City of New York
Located on Fifth Avenue, next to Central Park, is an elegant Neo-Georgian style building built in the 1930s. The red brick mansion is home to the fascinating Museum of the City of New York.
The museum's permanent exhibition showcases the past, present and future of New York across a collection of more than 700,000 objects in different thematic areas:
- Photography and prints from different periods of the city's history.
- Paintings and sculptures from artists like James Bard, specialist in marine watercolours and oil canvases, and landscape artist Eliza Pratt Greatorex.
- Furniture and decorative arts: from ceramics and glassware to antique toys and dolls.
- Costumes and textiles: showcases the city's development into a fashion capital as well as providing social commentary through various garments, including hand fans from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
The Museum of the City of New York's collections also include historic maps, manuscripts and other documents providing fascinating insight into the incredible history of Manhattan and the other boroughs on the banks of the East and Hudson Rivers.
The museum's audiovisual exhibitions are also well worth a visit: an award-winning 30 minute documentary, Timescapes, details 400 years of New York's history from humble beginnings as a small settlement to the cosmopolitan metropolis we know and love today.
To complete the experience, the museum's cafeteria, Amy's Bread, awaits you with typical New York sweet treats, breakfasts and lunches. There's also an excellent musuem shop for souvenirs!
